Adding to further prove that the video game industry isn’t completely immune to the current economic climate, Midway may be looking to sell off it’s successful and iconic Mortal Kombat franchise. As reported over at Gamasutra, Midway has been seeing some financial turbulence over the past years that finally lead to a filling for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February 2009.
According to newly-released court documents, the sale of the franchise is among the milestones Midway is proposing as part of its rescue plan.
The publisher is seeking court permission to operate an incentive plan for 29 key employees that would pay bonuses from a pool of $3.75 million to complete these goals.
What really stands out to me in the article is the section stating “incentive plan for 29 key employees that would pay bonuses from a pool of $3.75 million.” While I openly admit that I have no context for this statement, it does seem a bit odd to file for bankruptcy and then hand out bonuses.
